Following feedback from my tutor, there are a few things I need to change/add to my plan for next week. One of the most important things is firstly the scale bar, but also to create consistency throughout all the plans. I will need for do this by drawing trees on the section and floor plan and well as drawing labels on all of them.
Studio: Model Making
The task for this studio session was to create a 1:20 model of a significant room of your precedent study. I chose to make a model of one of the bedrooms, as this is one of the places where you can clearly see the well thought through use of material that Zumthor used for this house.
Charette- Dreamscape
In today’s studio our assignment was to create a 1:20 model of a place from our imagination or a place we wanted to visit one day. I decided to create model of the TWA Flight Center in New York, as this is a building I have researched a lot in previous projects, and it has always interested me a lot. Using thing cardboard a created three arches that come together to form what looks like the wingspan of an airplane or bird. This was the first time making a model, and it really surprised me how challenging it is, and how long it takes to produce one.
Axonometric drawings
In today’s studio session we were introduced to axonometric drawings and how to do them. There first task was to create a axonometric projection of our room based on the floor plan we created a few weeks ago. I found this to be more challenging than I first thought it would be as there were a lot of lines that had to be connected and it was difficult to figure out which belonged to which. I learned that it is better to do it in steps, and connect some of the lines before moving on to the next section of the drawing. Once finished, I started an axonometric projection of my precedent study. This was a lot more difficult as it’s a lot bigger, and the scale was smaller. It took me a lot of attempts, but in the end I was satisfied with the result. Having to do it over again several times also made me look at and understand the building a lot better. Once confirmed that it is correct by tutor, I will ink this projection.
This is a section of Secular Retreat at a 1:200 scale. After drawing this, I realized that it was too small, and many of the important details such as furniture were lost at this scale. Therefore I decided to adjust to a 1:100 scale.
Using Vectorworks, I have now scaled the floor plan of my precedent study to a 1:200 scale.
After scaling it, I have inked it on tracing paper. This floor plan has turned out quite small, however, if I draw this in scale 1:100 it is too big for an A3 paper. Therefore, I have decided to keep my drawing at a 1:200 scale, as all the details of the house are still visible and understandable.
I have drawn out the floor plan of Secular Retreat by Peter Zumthor, which is the house I am researching for this first project. The challenge with the floor plan I found, is that there is no scale bar on the plan, and therefore I do not know which scale this has been drawn to. I have attempted to use Vectorworks, to scale this plan, however I have not yet been successful with this. My next step in the process is to be able to scale it on Vectorworks at a 1:100 scale, and then go over it again on tracing paper. Although this plan is not to scale, doing this exercise has given me a much better idea of the different elements of this house. I got a better understanding of the rooms, the size of them, and the sections that the house is separated into.
